Measuring brain health: biomarkers and protective strategies

Brain health can be studied through both function and biology—but no single number tells the whole story.

The brain: your body's control tower

The brain receives and sends signals that shape cognitive, emotional, visual, auditory, and motor responses. Many of these functions can be measured. That raises an important research question: can we combine functional information with biological markers to better understand brain health?

What blood biomarkers can show

Researchers study proteins such as neurofilament light chain (NfL), phosphorylated tau (p-tau), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Each offers a different window into neuronal injury, neurodegeneration, stress, or support for neuronal growth.

Biomarker results are not a stand-alone diagnosis. Their meaning depends on the clinical picture, the assay, age, health conditions, and other test results. Vision, hearing, cognition, emotional wellbeing, and motor function can add further context in research models.

From measurement to protection

Measurement is useful only when it leads to better questions and better decisions. Sleep quality, regular movement, a balanced diet, meaningful social connection, cardiovascular health, and stress management all deserve attention as foundations of brain health.

Practices such as walking, strength training, yoga, breathing exercises, and meditation may support a broader health plan. The right approach depends on the person and should account for medical conditions, mobility, and professional guidance.

The goal is not one perfect score. It is a clearer, more complete picture that supports earlier and wiser action.
